A heartening confidence in manufacturing textiles in Australia is good reason for the owners of Melded Products to reinvest and reopen the iconic company. Melded Fabrics was once Australia’s premier non-woven fabric and carpet manufacturer that supplied the interior flooring, automotive and marine markets for decades.
As co-owner of the branding and promotional products company Signature Brands, Rob Carkeek was a customer of Melded Fabrics when he bought the company from the Nylex receivers in October 2009. Troubles, unrelated to trading, forced the company to cease manufacturing four years ago.
Today the business has been relocated to 34 Commercial Drive in Dandenong South and is being revitalised with investment in new equipment and machinery, including the installation of a new airlaid nonwoven line and textile waste recycling.
Products in the Melded Fabrics Commercial Fabrics and walling solutions range that features Front Runner®, Prelude® and Noticeboard® are now back on the market, supported by new surface treatments with acoustic properties.
The firm is now more nimble, with investment in digital direct print to fabric, providing “on demand” options, including full colour coverage, custom design and shorter turnaround times.
Managing Director Rob Carkeek plans to have the company back at full capacity by the end of 2017, including its workforce of up to 30 textiles workers.
Melded has already established a collaborative relationship with RMIT through which they aim to engage students in new creative design initiatives.
Melflor ™ Iconic Exposure Carpet Tiles, with new print options for the Display and Exhibition are back with new custom print wall display panel options.
Melded Fabrics will resume its tradition of making base fabrics, cut to shape, laminated to backing and printed for promotional and architectural applications. The company's traditional automotive range is limited, given the contraction in automotive manufacturing in Australia, but the old Melded Fabrics commitment to innovation by design is still palpable.
